This course is for researchers in all fields

All trials and surveys cost time & money. In order to get the maximum amount of insight from the minimum amount of data, the use of Statistical Inference ideas and tools are essential.

In this course, we will introduce the idea of hypothesis testing and how it can be applied to the design of your trials and surveys. As always, we will use a mixture of stimulating discussions and real life case studies to help you understand and apply the following concepts.

  • What are variables, factors & levels?
  • Why are null & alternative hypotheses important?
  • What are P-values and how do we interpret them?
  • What are statistical tests (T-tests, F-tests, ANOVA, Chi-squared & Binomial tests) and how do we use them?

Each concept will be carefully explained, its relevance to trial & survey design highlighted and how the relevant calculations can be done in Excel.

Note that this course is not a full-fledged Design Of Experiments (DOE) course. However, many of the concepts and tools that you learn about in this course form the foundations of DOE. By attending this course, you will find it very simple to take the next step of learning how to apply DOE.

“I liked the number and type of examples/case studies. [They] helped put [the theory] into practice and make more sense”, Rhiannon Platt, Performance Analyst, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service

“Thanks very much Nigel. A great 2 days that will greatly benefit my placement, my dissertation and my career.” James Harrison, Research Officer Intern, Worcestershire County Council

“The most important thing I learnt was about different types of data + the different types of analysis that is it appropriate to use with them.” Senior Research Officer, Ministry of Justice
